What is Schema.org?

Schema.org is a joint initiative of the search engines Google, Bing, Yahoo and Yandex aimed at making it easier to index web pages. Humans understand the code and its meaning when they go through the webpages, but search engines have limited understanding of the content on those pages. By adding additional tags to webpages we help search engines to better understand the content and display it in a relevant way.

The aim of the initiative is help search engines to interpret information on web pages so that it can be used to improve the display of search results, making it easier for people to find the information they are looking for.

Developers can refer Schema.org site to learn about structured data and improve how their sites appear in major search engines. This site can further help them embed machine-readable information in their code.

Rich Snippets

Schema.org is a standard and a preferred method to structure the content if you want to have rich snippet in search. Snippets are one of the most important determining factors for users to click through to your website from the search results. When users see snippets of your pages that are relevant to what they are searching for, it is very likely that they will click your link instead of others. The more descriptive the snippets, the easier it will be for users to decide whether the content is what they are really looking for.
Some data can also be used by search engines to create and display rich snippets within the search results. For example, the Rich Snippet below shows search results for a samosa recipe, including review stars, an aggregate rating value, vote count, total time it takes to make the snack and calories. This information is useful for anyone looking for this recipe.

Structuring for Rich Snippets

To make your pages eligible to appear in Rich Snippet form, always add structured data of the appropriate type to your content. Schema.org can be referred for different item categories and the HTML markup that should be done. Once the site contents are marked up it can be tested using the Structured Data Testing Tool.
By Using Structured Data Testing Tool, a single marked up page can be tested for errors. You can either enter the URL or simply paste the code . Once the testing is done, repair all the errors before deploying the code.
